Todd’s On A Roll!

This portrait of Todd Rundgren is in the June 2015 issue of MOJO magazine, which includes a terrific profile of Todd!

Todd Gets HIs MOJO!

Todd’s latest album “Global” is getting him his best reviews in years, as well as a ton of press – including making the cover of MOJO!

“Mescaline, Meat Loaf, Mad Fans & Me”

What a great title for the article, which is full of great insight about Todd…

Todd Rundgren in MOJO

Todd Rundgren Genius At Work

“Genius At Work!”

Look at the first line of the story:

“In the 70’s, Todd Rundgren was a prolific creator of conceptual prog-pop genius. In 2015 he’s at it again.”

Todd Rundgren MOJO

It’s a lengthy article, with great photos…and fun interview bites like this, when he shows the Writer his bedroom:

“Don’t tell Michelle you came up here,” he requests, “because it’s not very neat.”

Todd Rundgren Michelle Rundgren

He tells great stories about his early albums, as well as the importance of his fans:

“Without them,” he admits, “I’m screwed. That’s a good reason to stay humble.”

The Writer, Piper Feguson, visited Todd at his house on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, where Todd grilled up sausages, poured great wine, and shared a number of terrific stories about his life and career…

Todd Rundgren Something Anything

In speaking of his commercial success with “Something / Anything”, Todd admitted he chose a more “noncommercial” direction, never delivering on his early commercial promise.

“I can understand”, he replies, with a knowing, toothy grin. “I certainly got enough grief from the record label about it.”

todd-rundgren-global press

Thea article is full of candid, fascinating stories and reflections on his career, as well as a great look at the future as well.

“I never wanted to get bored. I still don’t. I have to have new options and new possibilities.”

Todd Rundgren

One of those new options is his new CD with Hans-Peter Windstorm and Emil Nikolaisen of the Norwegian band “Serena-Maneesh”, and the terrific new experimental CD, “Runddans”!

Todd Rundgren Runddans

Runddans Rules!

They refer to their debut release “Runddans” as “space disco.” And MOJO points out how impressive it is that Todd released TWO new CD’s in the same year!

Here is a great promotional interview Todd gave to support the album:

Kudos to Todd for the terrific magazine article – it’s great to see new young Artists flocking to him…and don’t forget, Todd had a muse as well:

Paul McCartney’s Brilliant “RAM 2!” Wings Soar With “Red Rose Speedway!”

This Is Paul McCartney’s Brilliant Album “RAM!”

paul-mccartney-ram

And This Is Paul McCartney’s Brilliant Followup, “RAM 2!”

If you haven’t heard “RAM 2”, then you have missed one of Paul McCartney’s greatest solo achievements!

Red_Rose_Speedway

Wait, you didn’t know there was a Macca album called “RAM 2”? Well, here’s a look at how “Red Rose Speedway” began as part of Macca’s “RAM” sessions!

Paul and Linda McCartney

Paul’s second solo album “RAM” was credited to Paul and Linda McCartney. If you want to know why, check out my story on the book that dives into the financial world of post-Beatles legal battles…

http://johnrieber.com/2012/03/19/beatle-eagle-big-battles-best-music-books-pt-1/

That is a great book about The Beatles and their tough legal battle after they broke up…

You-Never-Give-Me-Your-Money-9780061774461

As the book makes very clear, Paul was in tough economic shape after the breakup of the group, so adding Linda to the album credits released half of the money they made – while his was being held up! As tough as this time was, Paul wasn’t going to let it slow him down, and he decided to shake it all off and start a new band!

best paul mccartney albums

So he created another group known as Wings, and they released the shaggy, funky and melancholy “Wild Life.” Terrible reviews and dismal sales resulted in the band flying to Los Angeles to begin recording a more commercial followup – an album that came to be known as “Red Rose Speedway”.

Paul & Linda McCartney

Paul’s Pair Of “RAM” Songs!

The album was initially planned as a double album, and McCartney wanted to include some unreleased songs that had originally been recorded during the RAM sessions: yes, “Red Rose includes two RAM songs: “Get on the Right Thing” and “Little Lamb Dragonfly”.

Linda McCartney photos

And “RAM 2” Was Born!

So “Red Rose” has two “RAM” songs on the album. In addition, let’s not forget how the song “Ram On” ends:

“Who’s That Coming Round That Corner? Who’s That Coming Round That Bend?”

Yes, the very first lyrics from “Red Rose” are from “RAM!” Here is a great mashup of both of the “Ram On” songs that are from “RAM”:

Thanks to “Jakestardust2” on youtube for creating that…of course, those lyrics are the first lines from the song “Big Barn Bed”, which is the leadoff song from “Red Rose Speedway!”

So “RAM” carries right over onto “Red Rose”…

And Here Is “Big Barn Bed!”

The first song on “Red Rose” is “Big Barn Bed” – and it signals that the album is going to be a funky collection of catchy songs. This is a great video from the “James Paul McCartney” TV special from 1973 – the opening of the show, when the band Wings kicks into a feisty live version of “Bed”:

McCartney’s Mega Hit “My Love”!

The album contains what many consider to be Paul’s greatest love song, “My Love.” Most importantly, it put Paul right back at the top of the charts, where he would stay for the rest of the 70’s. Here is the video for his iconic love letter to Linda:

“Red Rose Speedway” is full of catchy songs, and is a worthy followup to “RAM”. What takes it to the next level is the addition of the band, giving the songs a bigger level of fullness – a richness that his solo music didn’t have at the time – but there is still the unmistakable sound of Paul, like on “Single Pigeon” and “When The Night.”

best Paul McCartney songs

“Abbey Road 2!”

Finally, in a nod to another brilliant piece of musicianship, “Red Rose Speedway” is closed by an 11-minute medley of songs “Hold Me Tight”/”Lazy Dynamite”/”Hands of Love”/”Power Cut”, in a similar style to most of “Abbey Road” side two.

“Power Cut” has an anthemic style, ending with a terrific singalong chorus, and sums up a terrific album from Paul McCartney & Wings.

Paul McCArtney

“Red Rose Speedway” went straight to the top of the charts and was the beginning of a decade-long string of hits for McCartney and Wings…and of course, Paul also recording THIS song at the same time!

live and let die 007

The Greatest 007 Theme Song Ever!

Yes, Paul also recorded “Live And Let Die” during the same recording sessions, and it has always been, to me, the best 007 song ever! Here is a look at the best – and WORST – James Bond songs ever!

http://johnrieber.com/2012/10/05/adele-skyfall-new-james-bond-theme-best-bond-themes-censored-bond-music/

Controversy is nothing new for Bond songs – and nothing new for Macca either…let’s not forget the HUGE and very nasty battle between McCartney and John Lennon at the time of the original “RAM” release!

paul-mccartney-ram

C-C-C-Catfight!

Yes, “Red Rose” is a worthy sequel to “RAM”, which is a brilliant album, but it was also the cause of a major battle between Paul and John….read all about it here:

Obviously, we all wish that The Beatles had stayed together – imagine what incredible music would have resulted….

Oh wait, someone did! This fascinating book takes a look at all of the solo music from the 70’s and reimagines it as Beatles music! Read about it here:

Beatles fans love to talk about what could have been…but let’s not forget what was – a “RAM 2!”

“A Genius A True Star!”

First of all, thanks to Jane Steen, a fellow “Todd Is God” fan who coined this phrase when I wrote about Rundgren’s recent article in MOJO magazine – it sums up Todd Rundgren perfectly!

Todd Rundgren in MOJO

Thanks also to all fans who responded so favorably to the article. For many, MOJO isn’t a magazine they have easy access to, so I’m glad I brought the article to the forefront, as it was a printed “love letter” to Todd!

Todd Rundgren new songs

“Way More Talent Than Is Useful!”

I love the fact that Todd’s back is on the table of contents page, along with an extensive article about his new CD “Global”, as well as his collaboration on “Runddans!”

There is also ANOTHER reference to Todd in the issue, where someone calls him brilliant and adds that he has “way more talent than is useful!” More on that in a minute, but first:

Todd Rundgren MOJO

“A Wizard A True Star!”

One of the aspects of the article I wanted to share, and delve into more deeply, is Todd’s brilliant – if very misunderstood – album “A Wizard A True Star!” Todd talks extensively about it in the MOJO article, and the magazine also showcases all of the Artists who have been influenced by “AWATS” AND Todd!

Todd Rundgren Something Anything

The “Something / Anything” Hangover!

We all know how brilliant this double album is – Rolling Stone named it one of the 500 greatest albums of all time – but the non-stop success of the album kept Todd’s followup effort on ice – and along with frustration about that, Todd was also spending his time experimenting on more than just music!

Todd Rundgren in 1973

“Between ‘Something/Anything’ and ‘A Wizard A True Star’ I took acid and everything changed.”

This is a quote from the MOJO article, and Todd goes on to discuss how his experiments with acid impacted his music.

Todd Rundgren

As he says in MOJO:

“There was a lot of stuff floating around”, he explains, “like synthetic mescaline or psilocybin, active ingredients in mushrooms. I took a couple of trips before I did (A Wizard…) and they had a pretty profound effect. I didn’t want to jump off the roof and commit suicide but my world view permanently changed. I’d be walking down the street and it would be like the buildings were falling on you.”

todd

He also states that he got off synthetic drugs after 1973.

“It’s impossible to keep that level of concentration and intensity going”, he admits.

But what came from that era is arguably Todd’s most creatively inspired effort ever!

AWATS Todd Rundgren

Todd’s Enduring “AWATS” Influence!

The brilliance of “A Wizard A True Star” may not have been understood when it was released, but since then, “AWATS” has continued to be more and more acclaimed as years go by – and many Artists refer to it as an inspiration to them!

Colin Newman

In the very same issue of MOJO, musician Colin Newman specifically lists “AWATS” as one of his music influences, saying this:

“When I was at college. I went into town in Winchester and they were having a sale. I both two records cheap that day – Wizard…because I’d previously heard I Saw The Light, a great Beatles pastiche…I put on A Wizard…and thought, ‘What the fuck is this?’, it went from going ‘Grrrgggr’ (mimics International Feels’ electron intro) to something from The Wizard Of Oz. It has a quality of someone who doesn’t take themselves entirely serious and is way more talent than is useful. I thought it was brilliant. He was amazingly slapdash in his approach to everything, and all his work methods were totally wrong. He’d record the bass before the drums. This record very much defined who I became.”

A_Wizard_a_True_Star_Todd Rundgren Live

Finally, one of the most interesting charts that accompanied Todd’s article is one that shows many of the Artists who have used Todd’s music in their own…

Todd Rundgren AWATS

“For The Love Of Todd: a dozen recent converts to that real Rundgren richness:”

Daft Punk Electroma

Among the many Artists influenced by Todd is one of the most popular groups in music today:

Legendary “Naked” Motorcycle Starlet! Hollywood Sex Symbol Gilda Texter! Fascinating Nude 70’s Movie Icon!

Here’s a credit for you:

most famous nude scenes

That’s right: a two minute scene in one of the early 70’s wildest counter-culture films lead to stardom for one VERY naked motorcylcle rider, also known as Gilda Texter!

Gilda Texter Vanishing Point

Hollywood Gets “Naked” On Wheels!

Here is a fascinating piece of Hollywood trivia: a young Actress who makes her movie debut by riding naked on a motorcycle – and turned it into a movie career!

naked Gilda

Here is the story: Gilda Texter was a young starlet in Hollywood in the early 70’s, when fame called on the back of a Harley! She got a very memorable role: she played a nameless, naked motorcycle rider in the cult classic “Vanishing Point!”

Vanishing Point Movie

Texter was “discovered” when she rode this motorcycle naked across the desert for a few minutes in the film…a film that became a cult hit in 1971 – a classic cult film that celebrated hippies and outcasts at a time of civil disobedience in the US!

naked motorcycle rider

Here is the trailer for “Vanishing Point”, with a noticeable segment with Gilda:

nudity Vanishing Point

From that one scene, Texter became a star, as “Vanishing Point” became a rallying cry against the establishment – a political anti-war, anti-police film that resonated with a young audience…oh, and it had a naked girl on a motorcycle as well!

70's nudity Gilda Texter

Soon , Gilda Texter became the “IT” girl, a sex symbol getting tons of attention, which led to her acting in a film that had a poster that promised wild wild things on screen!

runaway runaway poster

PLEASE NOTE: If you are shocked or embarrassed by total nudity and sexual activity, you are urged NOT to attend.”

I mean, C’MON…this movie poster is full of the craziest claims – and guess what? It worked! “The Runaway” was released the same year as “Vanishing Point”, and if to make sure that EVERYONE knew who Gilda Texter was, she had a THIRD film released that year as well!

Angels Hard As They Come

“Angels Hard As They Come!”

Gilda was in another anti-establishment film in 1971, with a movie poster that was as exploitative as you can get! And the best part of this is that while Gilda Texter was promoted as a sex symbol, and achieved her greatest claim for a nude scene, she ended up with a great career in the costume and wardrobe departments of over 40 movies and television productions!

vanishing_point NudeRider

Texter was Costume Supervisor on a number of movies, such as “Romancing The Stone”, Brian DePalma’s “Snake Eyes”, and “The Green Mile” with Tom Hanks.

Yes, she was a Costumer Supervisor even thought her breakout role had her completely nude!

naked motorcycle rider

This is what makes the movie business so endlessly fascinating. Gilda Texter had a great career in the entertainment business, with a unique entree into it….and if you look at “The Runaway”, you will see that she worked with one of the greatest character Actors of all time:

cult movie darker-than-amber

William Smith has been in a ton of movies – a great character Actor who commanded the screen. He not only co-starred with Gilda Texter, but he also starred in one of the grittiest movies of the early 70’s:

UK National Burger Day

Time To Bite Into Some Beautiful Burgers – And Donald Trump, Too!

The great website “BurgerBusiness.com” just announced a big day of burgers in England. It’s the third annual celebration of the UK’s “Nation Burger Day” on Aug. 27, and includes 20% discounts on burgers at hundreds of UK restaurants!

best burger recipes

There is also a “Street Feast” Thursday evening at Dalston Yard in northeast London! Kudos to “BurgerBusiness” for the story, and for giving us the inside bite on Donald Trump as well!

That’s right, according to the website: “National Burger Day may be a UK event, but Donald Trump is there, too, if only in name.”

The Trump Burger

Here is how “BurgerBusiness” describes their mouthful of Trump:

“The Donald Trump Burger is the National Burger Day entry from London’s Lucky Chip Burgers (which features Kevin Bacon, John Belushi and vegan Woody Harrelson burgers on its regular menu). The Trump Burger is cooked medium, with the restaurant warning that “there might be some blood coming out of it,” according to the Evening Standard. The topping include applewood-smoked bacon, American cheese and a “really, really rich” bourbon-vanilla barbecue sauce. Grilled onions will be neatly arranged on top a la The Donald’s hair, and it has pickles that “will leave a sour taste in your mouth.”

The Trump Burger

Well, I love their attitude! Although there is no way Donald Trump will be there to enjoy it, we can all imagine that he would look a bit like this if he were:

And Trump isn’t the only American at the festival – Philadelphia’s amazing PYT Burger will be there too!

Behold The Majesty Of “Lost In Translation”!

Here is the film’s trailer:

Bill Murray has said that “Lost In Translation” is the favorite film he’s made…here is the plot:

Murray is Bob Harris, a big movie star who is in Tokyo to appear in a Suntory Whisky commercial, while also escaping an unhappy personal life back home.

Tokyo Is One Of The Movie’s Best Actors!

One of the film’s many joys is how Coppola captures the energy and excitement of Tokyo – using iconic locations and the amazing visuals of the city…so that the city plays a major role in the movie…

best bill murray movie lost-in-translation

This is also one of Scarlett Johansson’s most nuanced performances, and she totally holds her own opposite Murray…

LOST-IN-TRANSLATION

One of the movie’s most iconic images is also one of the first: and it was a bit controversial at the time, although male fans of Johansson’s certainly loved it:

Scarlett Johansson nude

Scarlett Johansson said that she was reluctant to be filmed in practically transparent panties until Sofia Coppola modeled the panties herself to show her how they would look – and it’s now the most iconic image from the movie…

Scarlett’s husband is played by Giovanni Ribisi, a Professional Photographer who takes his wife along with him to Tokyo to film a ditzy movie star. Rumors have abounded that the character Anna Farris plays in the film was based on Cameron Diaz. Sofia was around her while Diaz made “Being John Malkovich with Sofia’s ex-husband Spike Jonz.

Coppola has denied it, but the “space cadet” blonde actress in the film has the style and tone of Diaz without a doubt:

Kelly: Everybody is always, like, “Kelly, you are anorexic.” And, I’m like, “No, I’m not.” I eat all kinds… I eat so much junk food, you wouldn’t believe it. I’d have a heart attack…
John: I thought you were anorexic…
Kelly: Everybody does…
John: [gesturing with his hands] Yeah, because you look so…
Kelly: [enthusiastically] Thank you. I know!

Another funny scene involves a woman sent to Murray’s hotel room to “entertain” him…but he was sent a dominatrix!

Premium Fantasy woman: Rip my stockings. Yes, please, rip them!
Bob: What?

Bob: Hey? Lip them? Lip them? What?

This movie gets better every time I watch it…and the ending is sublime…movies like this are so magical – and of course, Tokyo has never looked more alive…

It’s one of the many classic lines from one of the most neglected cult movies of the 1970’s, with another phenomenal performance by Jack Nicholson!

The Last Detail

Jack Nicholson chews the scenery for two hours in this great film from the early 70’s…check out the trailer:

Two Navy Shore Patrol – “Bad-Ass” Buddusky, and “Mule” Mulhall – are commissioned to escort a young sailor named Meadows to the brig in Portsmouth.

With a nickname like “Bad-Ass”, you KNOW that Jack is going to chew the scenery…

Buddusky: [pause] Well kid, there’s more things in this life than you can possibly imagine. I knew a whore once in Wilmington. She had a glass eye… used to take it out and wink people off for a dollar.

Jack Nicholson turned down Robert Redford’s role in “The Sting” to appear in “The Last Detail”, which was written by his good friend Robert Towne, who also wrote “Chinatown.”

The Last Detail (1973)

The script is full of legendary, profane dialogue like this:

Budduskey: I am the motherfucking shore patrol, motherfucker! I am the motherfucking shore patrol! Give this man a beer.
Meadows: I don’t want a beer.
Budduskey: You’re gonna have a fuckin’ beer!

The word “fuck” and all permutations of it are said 65 times. This was a record up to that time!

Jack Nicholson was nominated for Best Actor for the role…

Did Jack Retire?

The internet blew up late last year with news that Jack Nicholson had retired from film. There was a denial, but the fact is we haven’t seen him on screen for awhile…I looked at that story and some of Jack’s greatest film roles, including of course “Chinatown”.

Check out my story here:

While Jack Nicholson has been a super star for most of everyone’s life, did you know he got his start working with The Monkees?

Paul McCartney’s “Cold Cuts!” Classic Macca! One Beatle’s Legendary Single Gems!

cold_cuts paul mccartney

There’s A New Paul McCartney Album!

I know that Macca fans love to hear those words, but this is actually an album that never was, and only lives on in Paul McCartney’s world of bootlegs and bonus cuts on official CD releases!

Paul McCartney unreleased songs

Paul McCartney’s “Cold Cuts!”

“Cold Cuts” is Paul McCartney’s album that never was! Here is the story: in the 70’s, Macca was going to include outtakes and singles recorded but never released on any of his albums. According to wikipedia, the album was originally planned to be released in 1975 and McCartney revisited the project several times over the years until it was abandoned permanently in the late 1980s.

Paul McCartney Hot Hits Cold Cuts

“Hot Hits & Cold Cuts”!

The songs on the album were recorded during his early solo career, beginning with his first single after leaving The Beatles. It also includes material he recorded with Wings in the 1970s and 1980s, and this project has also been referred to as “Hot Hits & Cold Cuts!”

cold_cuts paul mccartney

Beatles fans know that the band was known for releasing songs between albums, and these singles were never included on the next record!

Strawberry fields forever

The Missing “Sgt. Pepper” Tracks!

Did you know that “Strawberry Fields Forever” was the first track recorded during the sessions for the Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”? The song was supposed to be on the album. Instead, with the group under record-company pressure to release a single, it was issued in February 1967 as a double A-side with “Penny Lane”. So two of The Beatles’ most classic songs were left off their classic album!

sgt. peppers lonely hearts club band

So one of music’s greatest achievements would have been even greater! Ultimately, the songs were added to the “Magical Mystery Tour” soundtrack, and the remaining Beatles singles were compiled on the “Hey Jude” album…and McCartney continued the tradition!

paul-mccartney-4-cd-cold-cuts-completed-40.gif

Paul McCartney released singles int he early 70’s without ever including them on albums…and it began as soon as he went solo, with these two classic songs, among his best ever:

Paul-McCartney best singles

“Another Day” / “Oh Woman, Oh Why”

Although it was the first single of McCartney’s solo career, “Another Day” was written and previewed during the Beatles’ “Let It Be” recording sessions in 1969. It was released in 1971, with “Oh Woman, Oh Why” as the B-side.

Here is a live clip when Paul performed “Another Day” in 1993…this is one of his greatest solo songs, and his voice is flawless…

Paul also continued a tradition of having terrific b-sides as well – in this case, “Oh Woman, Oh Why” was one of Paul’s crunchiest rockers…

The Story Of “Cold Cuts!”

McCartney began work on the album during Wings’ recording sessions in Nashville, Tennessee in July 1974, recording several new songs and overdubbing some previously unused tracks. The album was slated for release in 1975 but that never happened.

So what could have been on “Cold Cuts”? Most importantly, it could have been a compilation of all of Macca’s singles he released in the early 70’s that never ended up on any albums, like these!

Give Ireland Back To The Irish Paul McCartney

Paul’s Controversial Irish Song Was Wings’ First Single!

“Give Ireland Back to the Irish” is a song written by Paul and Linda McCartney in response to the events of Bloody Sunday in Northern Ireland on January 30, 1972. Paul, Linda and Wings recorded this song the next day at Abbey Road, and it was released as Wings’ debut single on February 25.

Paul recorded the band’s rehearsal of the song. Here is that performance!

The song was banned by the BBC, because it was too political for the time. Based on this controversy, and as a response, Paul recorded a nursery rhyme next!

Wings-Mary-Had-A-Little-Lamb

“Mary Had A Little Lamb”

Wings quickly released this as a single, and at the time, McCartney claimed it was written in response to the BBC ban on “Give Ireland Back to the Irish”

McCartney has since denied this, asserting that it was a serious effort to write a rock song for children, who he felt were being tragically overlooked by the music industry!

Here’s a great performance from The Flip Wilson Show!

Paul jumped right back into controversy with his next single!

Paul McCartney HI HI Hi

Paul Gets Banned For Dirty/Drug Lyrics!

“Hi Hi Hi” was the band’s next single, a raucous rocker that was immediately banned by the BBC for its sexually suggestive lyrics!

The BBC assumed that the title phrase, “We’re gonna get hi, hi, hi” was a drug reference, and they also objected to the lyrics “get you ready for my body gun”; McCartney has said that the correct lyrics are “get you ready for my polygon”, an abstract image, and later said, “The BBC got some of the words wrong. But I suppose it is a bit of a dirty song if sex is dirty and naughty. I was in a sensuous mood in Spain when I wrote it.”

Here is a version of this great single:

Hi Hi Hi

McCartney settled down and began releasing a series of catchy, non-controversial hit songs to satisfy fans between albums…

Paul+McCartney+and+Wings+-+Junior's+Farm

“Junior’s Farm”

Arguably Paul’s most famous “single” never released to an album…”Junior’s Farm” is a great rocker with the band helping him out…and here is a great live version with the band at Abbey Road in 1974:

Another great rocker was this gem:

Wings Soily

“Soily”

“Soily” was another never-released gem that Paul finally included as a live version on “Wings Across America” – here is a great version:

Another unreleased gem was called “The Mess” – it was finally released as a live recording from the 1972 “Wings Over Europe” Tour. It was previously released as the B-side of “My Love”. The version the we are hearing is a studio version taken from the sessions of Red Rose Speedway of 1972.

And now, the biggest hit of Wings’ career was never put on an album!

Mull_of_Kintyre

“Mull Of Kintyre”

The story of “Mull Of Kintyre” is fascinating – a melodic fold song about an idyllic place in Scotland, and it became Wings’ biggest hit of all time! Read all about it and see the beautiful music video here:

http://johnrieber.com/2015/07/25/paul-mccartneys-neglected-masterpiece-london-town-maccas-biggest-single-ever-rock-out-to-the-girls/

So the 70’s came to an end, and still no “Cold Cuts!”

In 1981, McCartney and Wings recorded additional overdubs for the unreleased tracks with the album, now titled “Hot Hitz and Kold Kutz”, slated for release in early 1981. However, according to wikipedia, Columbia Records was not interested in releasing an album of outtakes and the album was shelved.

obscure paul mccartney songs

“Kicked Around No More”

In the 90’s, Paul released his “Off The Ground” album, and lots of unreleased songs bubbled up as well, including this great song:

paul-mccartney-4-cd-set-complete-cold-cuts-collection-27.gif

Here is the track list of one of many bootlegs that have been released…note that most of these songs are unreleased tracks, while I have focused on songs that were released as singles or b-sides, but not on albums…

There is such a wealth of great McCartney material, some never officially released, some released only as singles…including the great James Bond song of all time:

Are You In A “Sad Clown” Movie Mood?

Well, time to cinematically cheer up and enjoy some of this!

worst movies

Time For A “Happy Blue Face!”

Someone asked me recently who were the most interesting – or WORST – Directors of all time! Well, here is one of each! You will be “fascinated” by this!

Fascinaiton movie

If you’ve never heard of French Director Jean Rollin, you have missed out on some very atmospheric, haunting, nudity and blood-filled – yet somewhat slow-moving – European art-film horror!

Fascination

Meet Jean Rollin!

Jean Rollin was a French film director, actor, and novelist – best known for his films in the “fantastique” genre, as they say in France. He specialized in atmospheric horror of the 70’s – when relaxed censorship rules in cinema allowed Directors to push the envelope!

Jean Rollin Director

Jean-Rollin

Jean Rollin’s are very interesting to watch: moody, atmospheric and did I mention that his films were filled with BLOOD!

The Living Dead Girl

Jean Rollin’s Cult “Artsploitation” Is “Redeemed”!

Thanks to the terrific “Redemption” series of releases – from the “Redemption Films” group – these movies are now available again – and gives each film a newly remastered look, plus tons of extras like documentaries, audio commentaries and trailers – a terrific job.

Requiem For A Vampire

Requiem For A Vampire

Here is an early classic: on the run from a reform school, two young women commit crimes dressed as clowns.

cult 70's movies

Yes, they commit crimes dressed as clowns. How can you argue with that? Here is the clown-filled trailer:

Of course, the two “fleeing female clowns” seek refuge in a haunted castle, and end up trapped with no escape!

requiem for a vampire

Because, as happens too often, this haunted castle is ruled by a hoard of sexy, blood-crazed vampires and their leader, an evil immortal creature who is the last of his kind.

requiem for a vampire

Another of Rollins films is this classic:

Fascination!

Jean Rollin Fascination

Considered by many to be his masterpiece, “FASCINATION” follows a swaggering thief who hides out in a lavish chateau, holding the female occupants at gunpoint.

Jean Rollin Fascination

naked sex movies

You can sense a trend here: Rollin’s films usually involve women who are kidnapped or held against their will – and who wreck revenge against their abductors – usually men. And they always end up in a deserted castle.

Women With A Thirst For Blood!

When night falls, the “Fascination” captor realizes that these two maids are not only deadlier than he imagined, but are gatekeepers to a ring of women with a thirst for blood.

Once again, the film is filled with hynotic imagery like this:

Fascination

And what I think is his most dynamic image ever captured in one of his films – the blonde on the bridge with the sickle…

fascination

This action sequence, while fairly slow moving – it is, as you know, Jean Rollin – this sequence is beautifully done and hypnotic…

Here is part of the sequence:

You must go out and buy this blu-ray to see the entire sequence, the movie as a whole, and all of the terrific extras! Then, you have to see THIS:

This is one of his last films. Here is the trailer:

Living_Dead_Girl-neck

“The Living Dead Girl” is a melancholy, moody bloodfest – it is certainly Rollin’s bloodiest film…

Director Jean Rollin died in 2010, but all of these releases have extensive material with him, as he actively participated in these great remasters. He introduces some of the films, takes part in commentaries, and discusses his work with passion and pride.

Now, you also asked about the worst Director of all time – which I think is unfair, since anyone who makes a movie deserves credit – even this guy!

andy milligan

Grindhouse Lives!

Meet Andy Milligan, who may just be Staten Island’s greatest filmmaker! Here are some example of his “masterpieces”!

ratsarecomingwerewolvesarehere

bloodthirsty butchers

The Ghastly Ones

These are films that you can savor over and over again, especially when they include dialogue like THIS:

Dusty Cole: How’s your mother?
Cherry Lane: She threw me out. I guess she got tired of me using all her hairspray.

Shooting on budgets that hovered around $10,000, Milligan turned out 29 movies between 1965 and 1988 – moves that were

“In Dripping Blood Color!”

torture-dungeon

While the posters were classic grindhouse “come ons”, his movies were appallingly shot, often ludicrously plotted shock films – but that’s what played in 42nd Street grind houses, drive-ins and avant-garde film festivals in the late 60’s and 70’s…

grindhouse nyc

Milligan churned out film after film, with some of exploitation’s greatest movies titles!

Body+Beneath+25

Torture Dungeon! (1969)
Bloodthirsty Butchers! (1970)
The Body Beneath! (1970)
Guru, the Mad Monk! (1970)
The Rats Are Coming! The Werewolves Are Here! (1972)

“EXPLICIT BEYOND BELIEF!”

And they weren’t just horror films – no, Milligan knew how to sex it up as well!

fleshpot on 42nd street

Fleshpot On 42nd St.
“Erotic, Sensual and Smoldering!”

That’s right, they weren’t all horror films, Milligan also loved deviant sex – and blew the lid of 42nd Street’s sleazy sex trade!

The plot was simple: A street whore desperately seeks love and acceptance against the backdrop of the criminal element of early 1970s Times Square.

fleshpot-on-42nd-street

The film featured classic Milligan dialogue like this:

Cherry Lane: Didn’t your mother ever tell you that you shouldn’t go out with strange men?
Dusty Cole: Bob’s not strange. He’s dull.

fleshpot on 42nd street

Wel, enough sex, let’s get back to what Milligan REALLY liked – movies that he filmed:

“In Cranium-Cleaving Color!”

How can you resist a movie that offers this tagline!

The Ghastly Ones

The Ghastly Ones!

You are seeing a trend: classic grindhouse poster art – sex, violence, SHOCKS BEYOND BELIEF! – c’mon in suckers, the water’s fine!

the-ghastly-ones-movie-poster-1968

First, check out the “Doctor’s Warning” on the poster – a classic “come on” for the suckers at that time…love it! Now, back to “The Ghastly Ones” plot: Three married couples are forced to spend the night in a Victorian-era house where they start getting killed off by a deranged psycho who’s bent on claiming an inheritance they are all entitled to.

the ghastly ones

Here’s a great bit of trivia, thanks to IMDB: In several of the fight scenes of the film, the crew and their cameras and sound equipment are visible. There are also moments when the director can be heard softly reminding the actors of their lines.

the ghastley ones

Now THAT”S film making! Here’s another example of Milligan’s madness:

The Body Beneath!

body_beneath

In this movie, Milligan captures the eerie horror of-, ah who’s kidding who? Do you REALLY care what it’s about? It’s slow-moving and laughably bad in a dementedly fun way! I mean, you have to watch it in order to find out why these women look like THIS!

The Body Beneath

There is so much more on Andy Milligan to share, including a book that tells the hilarious, and ultimately sad story of an awful filmmaker who managed to make a number of movies that are still being enjoyed today!

Welcome Back To “Downton Abbey”!

This is Highclere Castle, the “real” home of Downton Abbey!

Secrets_Highclere

This is the castle where “Downton Abbey” is filmed, and guess what? So much of the TV show is based on real events!

First, here is a series of teaser trailers for season 6 of “Downton Abbey”, which premieres in England soon!

Let’s begin with the latest trailer:

And if you need to see ALL of the new season’s promos, here they are all compiled in one fun “Downton Abbey” string!

season 6 Downton Abbey cast

I love this show – the rich characters, historical perspective, and of course, the drama! So where did Creator Julian Fellowes come up with this stuff?

How about – FROM THE SOURCE!

Lady Almina the REal Downton Abbey

Lady Almina The The Real Downton Abbey – Welcome To Highclere Castle!

Yes, there is an incredible true life story as recounted in the book “Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey”!

It tells the extraordinary story of life before, during and after the First World War – all through the eyes of Lady Almina from Highclere Castle.

Lady_Almina_and_the_Real_Downton_Abbey_The_Countess_of_Carnarvon_Book

Alina married the 5th Earl when she was 19, and the book shares fascinating stories on life, both upstairs and downstairs, at the Castle during Edwardian times – a “real life” Downton Abbey!

Highclere_Castle

Alina lives the life of a Countess, in a household just like what you see on “Downton Abbey” – full of pomp, circumstance and tragedy as well. She attended the funeral of Queen Victoria, the coronation of Edward VII and all the other grand and royal events.

The Real Downton Abbey

Alina’s life is captured well in the show, as her life changed in August 1914 when the First World War broke out. Almina rolled up her sleeves, turned Highclere Castle into a hospital and began to admit patients coming back from the trenches.

This real-life tale was captured well in “Abbey” as well…this is a great book for fans of that era in history…

Real Downton Abbey castle

All this great history makes me hungry! And guess what? There’s a “Downton Abbey” Cookbook!

downtown abbey cookbook

I love this book, full of great recipes inspired by the show…including one of England’s all-time best names for a dessert:

“Spotted Dick!”

Downton Abbey Spotted Dick

The most famous recipe from “Downton Abbey” Season 5 is Spotted Dick, which is a classic english custard dessert. “Spotted” refers to the currants or raisins in the pudding. “Dick” refers to pudding, or a reference to the German word dick, meaning thick or viscous.

Thanks to Chef Naresh Vyas for this recipe!

Serves 6 – 8

2 cups (250 g) all purpose flour
4 tsp. (20 ml) baking powder
Pinch salt
¼ tsp. (1 ml) each clove powder, allspice and mace powder
4½ oz. (125g) shredded suet* (make sure it is cold)
1½ cups (180 g currants) (include a little chopped candied orange or lemon peel if you prefer)
1⁄3 cup (80 g) caster sugar
Fine zest of 1 lemon
Fine zest of 1 small orange
2 ⁄3 cup (150 ml) whole milk, plus 2–3 tbsp. (30–45 ml)
Custard or non fat greek yoghurt to serve

spotted+dick

Put the flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Add the suet, currants, sugar, lemon and orange zest and spices. Mix well.
Add the milk (except the 2–3 tbsp.) and mix to a firm but moist dough, adding the extra milk if necessary.

Shape into a fat roll about 8 inches (20 cm) long. Place on a large rectangle of baking parchment. Wrap loosely to allow for the pudding to rise and tie the ends with string like a Christmas cracker. Alternatively, you can wrap the log in muslin as it will let in the steam. Tie it loosely so it can expand as it cooks.
Stove method: Place a steamer over a large pan of boiling water, add the pudding to the steamer, cover and steam for 1½ hours. Top up the pan with water from time to time.

Oven method: Use a large fish poacher or similar large pan with a lid, placing the pudding on a rack in the pan with enough space for water underneath. Pour in boiling water just short of the rack, cover with the lid and put in oven for about 1 hour. Check until pudding is done, making sure the pan is never dry.
Remove from the steamer and allow to cool slightly before unwrapping and slicing.
Serve with Light Custard Sauce, Sweet Sauce or non fat greek yoghurt.
You can also flambé the pudding with brandy like you would with a plum pudding.

And if you are too lazy to bake it, just buy it out of a can like I do!

“We’ve got all visuals associated with the hits on the album, 1,” he tells us. “All the music videos, and where there isn’t a music video – they’ve made some up! Which is brilliant. They’ve found footage.”

Paul & Linda McCartney

“‘Hey, Bulldog’ is to die for, as my wife would say,” McCartney continues. “It’s great, because there happened to be a camera crew there filming The Beatles at EMI while we were doing ‘Lady Madonna’. They were going to film a little bit of that, but they stayed and we got onto ‘Hey, Bulldog’. It’s great, and it all fits with the record because they filmed the take we used.”

“Squeal Like A Pig!”

It is one of cinema’s most iconic lines. And one of film’s most intense moments of all time. I just spoke to someone who didn’t know even know that “squeal like a pig!” was from a movie – and certainly didn’t know it was from one of the greatest films ever made:

deliverance

Deliverance!

“Deliverance” was a cultural phenomenon from the moment it was released in 1972 – a shocking story of friendship and survival – and now there is a fascinating oral history about the film, how Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson were set to star in it, and the on-set fight between the Director and Author!

deliverance trivia

Lewis: Can that chubby boy handle himself?
Ed: Bobby? He’s rather well thought of in his field, Lewis.
Lewis: Insurance? I never been insured in my life. There’s no risk.

deliverance

Burt Reynolds is outdoor fanatic Lewis Medlock, who is intent on seeing the Cahulawassee River before it’s turned into one huge lake. Lewis takes his friends, including the “chubby boy” on a river-rafting trip they’ll never forget.

Here is the trailer:

Burt Reynold Deliverance

“Deliverance” was one of the most iconic films of the 70′s, nominated for a slew of Oscars, but it’s a bit overlooked these days. In 1972, this was an extremely controversial film – “squeal like a pig!” was a hot topic of discussion. It was also one of the great action dramas of the seventies – Burt Reynolds became a superstar based on this film…

If you haven’t seen this brilliant movie, check out new blu-ray and DVD versions that have documentaries and commentary attached, and they are all worth viewing – and of course, there are the “dueling banjos!”

This was such a controversial film – brutal and violent, and of course “dueling banjos” and “Squeal like a pig!” became permanent fixtures in pop culture forever…and now there is a fascinating oral history about making the movie…here is what Director John Boorman had to say about casting the film:

Deliverance bhind-the-scenes stories

Jack Nicholson And Marlon Brando Star In “Deliverance”!

Well, ALMOST! Here is the fascinating anecdote that speaks volumes about the movie industry.

JOHN BOORMAN: Warner Bros. wanted two major stars, so I went to Jack Nicholson [to play Ed]. He agreed to do it and asked, “Who will you get to play Lewis?” I said, “I don’t really know yet.” He said, “What about Brando?” So I went to see Marlon Brando—spent the day with him. Finally, he said he’d do it. I asked, “Who’s your agent?” He said, “I don’t have an agent.” I said, “Well, what’s your price?” And he said, “I’ll take the same as you pay Jack.” I went back to Nicholson’s agent and said, “What do you want for Jack?” He said, “Half a million.”

Jack Nicholson and Marlon Brando

Now, Nicholson had never got more than $75,000. So I told studio head Ted Ashley. “Brando? Oh, God. He doesn’t mean anything anymore—he’s box-office poison.” Well, I thought Nicholson and Brando would work very well together. Ashley asked, “What does Jack want?” I said, “Well, he wants half a million.” “Half a million?!” Ashley almost went through the roof. Then he kind of calmed down and said maybe they would pay him that money because everyone in town wanted Nicholson. He said, “What does Brando want?” “I agreed to pay him the same as Jack.” Ashley then exploded, “I’d be laughed out of this town if I paid half a million for Brando.” I said, “Look, you asked me to get two stars. I got them. Now you’re saying you don’t want to pay them. What happens now?” He said, “Well, you make it for a price, go with unknowns, and let’s see what happens.”

Deliverance trivia

So instead, the lead roles go to Jon Voight and Burt Reynolds, helping to cement them as two of the hottest stars of the 70’s…and more than 40 years later, this film still stands as a classic piece of filmmaking…

Oh, and here’s one more great story: the Author of the book “Deliverance”, James Dickey, broke John Boorman’s nose and knocked out his teeth!

Deliverance Author James Dickey

James Dickey wrote the novel “Deliverance”, and he has a small role in the movie. Legend has it, he and John Boorman allegedly got into a fistfight on set, in which the writer broke the director’s nose and knocked out his teeth!

Dickey, who was also an alcoholic, clashed heavily with Boorman throughout the shoot, particularly after the director cut the first 19 pages of the shooting script. According to Jon Voight’s body double on the film, Claude Terry, Dickey would sit in a bar saying complaining about the film.

Jon Voight Deliverance

“God, they’re ruining my fucking movie, ain’t they? They’re not doing my book,” while Boorman says that Dickey was drunk on set, and became “very overbearing with the actors.” According to legend, things reached a peak when director and writer got into a fistfight which left Boorman with a broken nose and four teeth knocked out!

Lucy Irvine Castaway adventure

Looking For The Ultimate Escape?

For one determined young woman, that escape involved a year on a deserted island! I have written about Author Lucy Irvine’s amazing books, and her incredible life.

That life is dramatic, sad, and ultimately inspiring!

Runaway memoir

Runaway!

I will share her story of living on a tropical island for a year in a moment, but first, following the success of her first book “Castaway”, she published “Runaway” – the very intense story of her upbringing in England, where she frequently ran away from home. The book describes how, while hitchiking in Greece, she was raped at knife-point and subsequently suffered a mental breakdown.

Lucy Irvine Runaway

As this cover says, “Runaway” is the story of Irvine’s life that lead her to become a “Castaway.”

She writes honestly about her life, including the traumatic moments that led her to breakdown completely. But her candor, as well as her indefatigable spirit, make the book an inspiration, and these life events led the young woman to answer this ad:

Castaway newspaper ad

“WRITER seeks ‘wife’ for year on tropical island.”

This ad resulted in one of the best travel memoirs ever written…

castaway

In 1980, Irvine responded to the ad, placed by writer Gerald Kingsland – and they became self-imposed “castaways” for a year on the isolated and uninhabited island of Tuin, located in the Torres Strait between New Guinea and Australia.

castaway memoir

In 1983, Irvine published her account of the experience. The book was a huge hit, and later was the basis for the 1986 film.

castaway-1986-oliver-reed-and-amanda-donahoe

The movie starred Oliver Reed and Amanda Donohoe. According to Irvine, the film, directed by Nicolas Roeg, is more about the relationship between an older man and a young woman than it is about her experiences on the island.

Castaway on a deserted island

The book is a fascinating, candid memoir – to read more about it, here is my story on Irvine’s experience on the island:

http://johnrieber.com/2013/10/04/castaway-amazing-dangerous-real-life-island-escapes/

The success of “Castaway” led Irvine to write her memoir of growing up, “Runaway.” After several years, events led her to write another book as well…

lucy irvine faraway

Based on reading her work, Irvine was approached by Diana and Tom Hepworth to write their biography. In 1947, the two British expatriates had set sail from England in search of a faraway paradise where they could raise a family.

lucy irvine faraway bookk

They settled on Pigeon Island in the Solomons, running a trading business. Irvine accepted their invitation and in 1998 she travelled to the Solomon Islands and began the process of writing the Hepworth’s story. She took her two young children with her, and the story she wrote about the experience is fascinating.

You can read about it here:

http://johnrieber.com/2014/05/05/faraway-lucy-irvines-castaway-sequel-more-amazing-island-escapes/

Since then, Irvine has lived in Bulgaria, taking on the goal of helping feral animals in that rural country…and writes about her efforts on her Facebook page…

Along with those posts, Irvine also recently published her first collection of short fiction:

Irvine has lived a fascinating life, and deserves all of the accolades she has received. You can read more about her new book by clicking here:

time to celebrate some of the greatest musical Artists of the 70’s!

Steve Miller The Joker

Time To Celebrate “The Joker!”

It’s one of the most iconic songs of the 1970’s, Steve Miller’s “The Joker.” It’s a wild album cover, and clearly the inspiration for Jim Carrey’s “The Mask”, but the lyrics are even wackier! I mean, who doesn’t sing along to these?

“Some people call me the space cowboy, yeah
Some call me the gangster of love
Some people call me Maurice
Cause I speak of the pompatus of love”

pompitous of love definition

“The Pompatus Of Love” Indeed!

That’s right, Steve Miller created one of the greatest words in music history! The song is instantly recognizable because of the words he wrote…

classic 70's rock steve miller

“Cause I’m a picker
I’m a grinner
I’m a lover
And I’m a sinner
I play my music in the sun

I’m a joker
I’m a smoker
I’m a midnight toker
I sure don’t want to hurt no one”

Here’s a classic music video from the early 70’s…

Steve Miller songs

Steve Miller forged his reputation as a Chicago blues man, playing with Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Guy, and Chuck Berry.

Steve Miller best songs

It was the success of “The Joker” that propelled him to fame, and it was a double shot of creativity that led to two of the best albums of the 70’s, beginning with the classic:

Steve miller fly like an eagle

Steve Miller’s Double Shot Of Glory!

What makes “Fly Like An Eagle” even better is knowing that Miller recorded THIS album at the same time!

Steve Miller Book of Dreams

Steve Miller and his band showed up at CBS Studios in San Francisco in 1975 full of creative steam, and the two albums were recorded simultaneously!

It all got started with the title track for “Fly Like An Eagle”:

Steve Miller band live concert tour

I love that the Steve Miller Band is still touring, and why not? “Fly Like An Eagle” also included this classic, with more fun Miller wordplay:

“Take The Money And Run”

Look at these rhymes!

“Billy Mack is a detective down in Texas
You know he knows just exactly what the facts is
He ain’t gonna let those two escape justice
He makes his livin’ off of the people’s taxes”

Steve Miller band live

Here’s a great live performance from 2009, and you can see that Miller and the band are still having a great time performing the song:

The hit single “Rock’n Me” was also on the album, which is full of great songs, with a bluesy groove and great instrumentation…now imagine that the band also recorded this classic hit!

steve-miller-band-jet-airliner-1977

Paul Pena wrote the song, and Steve Miller made it a catchy Top 10 hit from “Book Of Dreams”, which also included “Swingtown” and “True Fine Love.” Just as with “Fly Like An Eagle”, the album is beautifully done…Miller produced both of these albums at the same time, and considered releasing a double album!

best 70's music steve miller

Instead, the band released them exactly one year apart, and both were huge hits! “Fly Like An Eagle” had three hit singles, including the #1 hit “Rock n’ Me”. The album peaked at #3 on the Billboard charts.

Steve Miller Book of Dreams

“Book of Dreams” fared even better as an album, peaking at #2 on Billboard. And of course, it includes my favorite Steve Miller song:

Steve-Miller-Band-Jungle-Love

“Jungle Love” Rocks!

Here’s an interesting live studio take, slightly different than the official released single:

“Jungle Love” was written by guitarist Lonnie Turner and bassist Greg Douglass.

This two-shot of great music was the pinnacle of the band’s success, and as I said, they still perform today, because “The Joker” just keeps on rocking!

steve_miller_mask

Miller is one my favorite Artist of the 70’s, along with some other like these:

the doobie-brothers

The Doobie Brothers Roll On!

I love The Doobie Brothers, and they are also still recording and touring the world. What’s fascinating about this band is that they were hugely successful TWICE – with two distinctly different sounds!

Read all about it here:

http://johnrieber.com/2015/05/24/black-water-what-a-fool-believes-a-tale-of-two-doobie-brothers/

Another classic band from the 70’s also changed their sound, going from a more straightforward pop sensibility to a jazzy cool hipster vibe…

Donald Fagen Walter Becker

Icy Cool Steely Dan!

Another band I loved from the 70’s achieved a high level of success before acrimoniously breaking up:

supertramp-breakfast-in-america

Supertramp Is “Bloody Well Right!”

They are another of the under-appreciated bands of the 70’s, even though they have some of the era’s most recognizable hits!

Read about the prog rock pop majesty of Supertramp by clicking here:

Some 70’s bands are back…case in point, time to say “welcome back” to ELO!

Grand Funk Railroad logo

They’re An American Band!

How can you NOT love Grand Funk Railroad? The footstompin’ success of this classic American band can be seen here:

http://johnrieber.com/2014/05/28/keep-it-shinin-on-todd-rundgren-makes-grand-funk-railroad-a-classic-simpsons-american-band/

One reason for Grand Funk’s success is this guy:

Todd Rundgren

Todd Is God!

Todd Rundgren produced Grand Funk’s two biggest albums, and a ton of other great people too, from Hall & Oates to Patti Smith and “Bat Out Of Hell!”

Paul McCartney’s Cracked “Back To The Egg!” The All-Star “Rockestra” Band! A Musical Farewell To Wings!

Paul McCartney Back To The Egg

“Back To The WHAT?”

If you aren’t familiar with Paul McCartney’s last Wings album, you aren’t alone! “Back To The Egg” was one of McCartney’s least successful albums ever, and led to the demise of Wings once and for all…too bad, because wait until you hear what the title meant!

Paul McCartney Back To The Egg music

I wanted to take a look at this “forgotten” Wings album and see if history has been kind to it, but first, here is the promo for the album, pushing “12 new songs~”

Now, Macca fans know that there are FOURTEEN songs on the album, and the remastered version swelled to seventeen! That may just have been one of the many reasons the album was doomed – no one at the record label was even counting the tunes right!

Wings-Back-To-The-Egg

“Back to the Egg” was the seventh and final studio album by Wings, released in 1979…and it was the only Wings album for new band members Laurence Juber and Steve Holley.

Paul McCartney music

According to wikipedia, “Back To The Egg” was a concept album! Authors Chip Madinger and Mark Easter write this about it in their book “Eight Arms to Hold You”:

Wings-Back-To-The-Egg graphic

“The idea was to have a theme of a working band, getting back on the road … or ‘back to the egg’ (or protective shell) of touring.”

yes, McCartney was trying to tell an ambitious tale of a “band on the run!”

Paul McCartney Wings band

The Critically Cracked “Egg!”

“Back to the Egg” got terrible reviews when it came out.

Rolling Stone magazine actually called it:

“The sorriest grab bag of dreck in recent memory”!

Wings last album

The album hit the top ten, but McCartney had a history of debuting at the top of the charts, and the album faded quickly from the charts…

Wings-Back-To-The-Egg

The record company released three singles: “Old Siam, Sir”, “Getting Closer” and “Arrow Through Me” – but none became hits…and most McCartney fans don’t even think about these songs…

Wings-Back-To-The-Egg-175677

Paul’s “Rockestra!”

There was one silver lining – the song “Rockestra Theme”, recorded with a cast of guest musicians from The Who, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd!

Here is Paul’s live version from the “Concert for the people of Kampuchea” in 1979 – with a very energetic Pete Townsend!

The song even won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 1980.

The long-planned Wings tour of the world ended in January 1980, when McCartney was arrested in Japan for possession of drugs.

And that was the end of Wings…so just how good or bad is “Back To The Egg?” I for one had no idea it was a concept album, but here is a medley of songs from he album:

worst paul mccartney albums

There’s a bunch of catchy stuff here, and it plays in many ways like side two of “Abbey Road”: many of the songs are short, some fragments that segue into each other…and it has one gorgeous ballad – check out the music video for “Arrow Through Me”:

Abbey Road Rockestra Paul McCartney

“After the Ball / Million Miles” is a perfect example, two very catchy songs put together in a montage on the album, followed by “Winter Rose / Love Awake” – and I really like the song “So Glad To See You Here”…but nothing popped on the album, and Paul has never really looked back at it…

wings-back-to-the-egg-paul-mccartney-john-bonham-rockestra

But let’s not forget the “Rockestra Theme!” Look at that lineup! David Gilmour, Pete Townsend and many others joined in on that terrific song…but “Back To The Egg” has become a little-remembered piece of Macca history…you never hear any of the songs played…

Paul McCartney christmas song

On the remastered version of the album, Paul included his “Wonderful Christmastime” single, which wasn’t on the original album…

So Paul’s “Egg” flopped, Wings was no more, and the 80’s lay ahead…more on that in a later post…let me know what you think of “Back To The Egg”!

The Magic Of The 70’s!

The 70’s may have ended on a sour note for Paul, but it was quite a decade of amazing music for him! Remember this one – his historic tour of America in the 70’s!

http://johnrieber.com/2014/07/12/paul-mccartney-wings-over-seattle-the-kingdome-implosion-seattle-sports-history/

I saw Wings at Seattle’s Kingdome, and the show was amazing, as “Wings Over America” proves – Macca was on such a creative role at the time, but my favorite is:

RAM On!

Here is a look at Paul’s masterpiece “RAM”, and his epic battle with John Lennon!

http://johnrieber.com/2012/08/20/macca-ram-on-paul-mccartneys-masterpiece-john-lennons-fury-a-beatles-c-c-c-catfight/

Can you imagine the music if they had continued to collaborate?

That may be more than 40 years old, but it still plays fresh today…and Macca just keeps rocking!

paul-mccartney-new

I continue to enjoy his latest work, the terrific “NEW!” Songs such as “Queen Eye” and “Everybody Out There” are among his best…see the great music video here:

Now, onto Paris, where there is a restaurant that serves the world’s best – and probably most expensive – CHICKEN!

Chez L'Ami Louis Paris

Welcome To Chez L’Ami Louis!

Here we are: the legendary Chez L’Ami Louis. This restaurant has been called “the world’s most famous bistro” – tucked away in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris – it has only twelve tables and serves meals in a traditional French setting.

First, let’s look at the menu – I didn’t get ALL of it, but most, and as you can see, the menu isn’t that large, but I think everyone is there for one thing anyway – the legendary “Poulet Roti” for two:

Paris Chez L'Ami Louis menu

Bring On The $125 Chicken!

You read that right: Chez L’Ami Louis is famous for their Poulet Roti for 2 – a gorgeously roasted chicken that costs $125!

First, the chicken is brought to your table for inspection after the roasting is complete:

Chez L'Ami Louis roast chicken for two

The chicken sells for 85 euros for two – based on exchange rates, that was $125 for us – but before you question that cost, take a look at the dish as they deliver it to your table:

First thing they deliver is the breast, still attached to the bone, along with herbs and the most delicious roasting juices you can imagine:

Yes, in the picture above you can see the chicken on the table to the right – but what is that to the left?

More Chicken! Yes, MORE CHICKEN!

After you are served the breast, they take the chicken away…but there is more: after you finish your first plate of poulet, they bring out the rest of the bird:

What is truly amazing is that this chicken STILL glistens with juice – and the flavor of the roasted skin has seemed to get more intense by resting it…

So, there’s one of the world’s greatest bites of food – a perfectly roasted Parisian chicken…now, it’s time to head to another part of Europe for food that is far cheaper than $125, but just as delicious!

Cal Pep Barcelona

Welcome To Barcelona’s “Cal Pep!”

Cal Pep is one of the most famous tapas restaurants in Spain, renowned for their fresh daily tapas that change depending on the market products of the day – meaning, you can order off a menu, but it’s more fun to let them bring whatever is the freshest bite that day!

And that included what is one of my favorite bites of food of all time!

It’s a plate of baby squid and chickpeas – absolutely delicious…the soft bite of the squid with the slight crunch of the chickpea…in a sauce that is smooth and rich…an incredible taste sensation….

Barcelona was an incredible food adventure for us….a great foodie city full of terrific food everywhere you turned!

France is also a great food country of course, and we had the chance to cook in Provence with one of our favorite Cookbook Authors and Food Writers, Patricia Wells!

I could eat that forever, but as amazing as the flavor to act soup was, what followed was a culinary masterpiece of creativity!

It begins as a simple “fire” set at your table…

Alinea fire dish

Here’s how it works: a plate is set down on the table with two pieces of sashimi on it…and then they set the plate on fire!

Alinea fire dish

This Place Is On Fire – Literally!

You can see there are two twigs on the plate, and you are instructed to pierce the sashimi cook it a bit over the fire if you don’t like your fish raw!

While we love raw sashimi, we also loved the idea of giving our fish a quick sear…

Alinea fish dish on fire

So far so simple…we quickly moved on to our next dish…while the fire continued to burn gently on the table…

Leading to one of my favorite “surprise bites” of food ever!

Alinea Michelin 3-star

“Jump Into The Fire!”

There’s an incredibly inventive reason the fiery plate is left on your table – it is cooking your next course!

While you were distracted by other bites, there was an incredible bite of food continuing to secretly cook – a roasted parsnip and chunk of pork belly is in the smoldering embers…oh, except those aren’t embers!

That’s right, instead of embers, that’s a roasted parsnip, with the char scraped away….

Next, they dig around in the embers and a banana leaf is pulled out of the fire, and inside is a delicate chunk of pork belly!

The imagination that went into the creation of this multiple fiery course is so impressive, and delicious! A smokey bite of pork belly cooked on the table…if you want to see more of this amazing meal, you can click on the rest of my story here:

legendary giallo films

Time To Head To Italy For A Good Scare!

Some of the most inventive thrillers ever made came from Italy, during a time when the “giallo” film was at its height – just in time for Halloween, welcome to the bloody world of the Italian sex shocker!

best italian sex shockers

classic giallo films

Let’s begin with a film that was so controversial it landed the Director in court, facing prison time! It’s all because of this:

“In the annals of the abnormal there is no more erotic nightmare than the strange lusts of a…

Lizard In A Woman’s Skin!”

One of the most legendary Italian sex shockers is also one of the most controversial! Here is the plot: Florinda Bolkan plays the daughter of a prominant English politician who keeps having recurring “nightmares” in which she makes love to a bisexual nympho who lives downstairs and conducts all-night LSD orgies!

That’s Right: ALL-NIGHT LSD ORGIES!

Anyone who has nightmares involving a bisexual nymph is just looking for trouble! FYI, the film was released in the US as “Schizoid”, which she certainly was! When the nocturnal wet dreams become murderous, the neighbor turns up dead, and Florinda is the main suspect. Did she actually commit the murder she dreamt about?

And Who Is This “Giallo?”

“Giallo” is a 20th-century Italian genre of literature and film. In Italy, the term denotes thrillers, typically of the crime fiction, mystery, and horror categories. “Giallo” refers to a style of murder mystery film which includes lots of horror, eroticism and sex! Here is what one of the books looks like:

Giallo Book

As you can see, it’s a lurid “come-on” to the reader, or in this case, to the moviegoer…and “Lizard In A Woman’s Skin” is a perfect fit as well, as it’s a sex shocker with a title as lurid as the style of filmmaking…

Lizard in a Woman's skin classic giallo

The Master! Director Lucio Fulci!

The Director of the movie was Lucio Fulci, one of Italy’s great horror filmmakers.

Among his films was this classic of the genre:

Don't Torture A Duckling sex shocker

The Director was such a master of shock that a judge threatened to throw him in jail!

controversail lizards skin dog scene

One such shocking scene in “Lizard’s Skin” involves a room full of disemboweled dogs. Director Fulci was nearly sent to prison because it was believed that the dogs were real and Fulci had allowed animal cruelty on the film! Crew members had to testify in court that the “dogs” were indeed fake and no animals had ever been harmed. Special effects artist Carlo Rambaldi even presented the dog props in court to convince the jury. This was the first time that an effects artist had to testify in court that their work was fake!

Paul McCartney’s “Press To Play” Disaster! A Critical Re-examination!

“My Body Needs Attention My Mind Is In A Mess,
Oklahoma Was Never Like This.”

Paul McCartney Press song

Those Lyrics Say It All!

“Oklahoma was never like this” – OK then! And look at Paul in this studio photo: McCartney almost seems resigned to the disaster that was his album “Press To Play” – and why not? Here is what he said about the album at the time:

“When we started working on the record, Hugh came in one day and said he’d had a dream,” McCartney recalled when he visited New York in 1986. “He dreamed he woke up one morning and had made this really bad, syrupy album with me, an album he hated, and that it had blown his whole career. We took that as a little warning”.

paul-mccartney-press-to-play

Hugh’s Nightmare!

The “Hugh” that McCartney mentioned was Hugh Padgham, the Music Producer famous for recording with Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Genesis, The Human League, The Police, and XTC – and he produced Paul McCartney’s solo album “Press To Play”…and as for his other celebrity Musicians, Phil Collins would be joined on “Press To Play” by Pete Townsend, raising the stakes even higher!

hugh_padgham press to play

What’s Up With “Press To Play?”

So what went wrong? Paul McCartney teams up with a big hit Producer, celebrity Musicians join in…and it results in one of the most neglected of all of Macca’s albums!

Just HOW bad is “Press To Play?” Or is it just another of those McCartney albums that critics had their knives out for? Time for a critical re-examination!

First, let’s set the stage in the world of Macca:

Paul McCartney Tug Of War

At this point in the mid-1980’s, McCartney was coming off of two BIG hit albums: 1982’s “Tug Of War” and “Pipes Of Peace” in 1983.

Paul McCartney Pipes Of Peace

In 1984, McCartney made a movie, and released a soundtrack for – the critically panned effort “Give My Regards To Broad Street.” The film co-starred Ringo Starr, and the soundtrack album sold well, but the reviews were harsh…

As Roger Ebert said in his review:

“I think you can safely skip the movie and proceed directly to the sound track.”

Give My Regards To Broad Street

Time To “Press” On!

McCartney released music on a regular basis throughout the 70’s and into the 80’s, and so he pressed on from “Broad Street”, and began recording “Press to Play” in early 1985. In a bit of a twist, he co-wrote six of the songs with 10cc guitarist Eric Stewart, and it was in the early part of recording the album that he uttered his prescient comment:

“When we started working on the record, Hugh came in one day and said he’d had a dream,” McCartney recalled when he visited New York in 1986. “He dreamed he woke up one morning and had made this really bad, syrupy album with me, an album he hated, and that it had blown his whole career. We took that as a little warning”.

Did this nightmare come true? Is “Press To Play” a “bad, syrupy album?”

Press to Play album Paul McCartney

Perhaps the first warning sign came when the recording sessions lasted until the end of the year, with only one song from the recording sessions released – a song not even used on the album:

paul-mccartney-spies-like-us-parlophone

McCartney “Spies” A Movie!

“Spies Like Us” was recorded during the “Press” sessions, but wasn’t included on the finished album. Instead, it was released as a single, as well as the title track for the limp Chevy Chase / Dan Ackroyd comedy of the same name – but even though the movie bombed, the song was a top 10 hit, setting the stage for the release of “Press to Play” in 1986.

Paul McCartney Press song

Time To “Play” Some “Press!”

So here is what was finally released – ten songs that form the basis of “Press To Play.”

paul-mccartney-press-to-play

Like previous McCartney solo albums, it’s a beautifully produced album, with mid-tempo rockers, ballad and some experimental tracks as well, with the cover evoking a classic 40’s Hollywood picture of Paul and Linda.

Let’s begin by listening to the first song on the album:

Paul-McCartney-Stranglehold

“Stranglehold”!

Paul comes out rocking, with a tight, joyous song that has energy and rebellion and a catchy hook.

Here is the music video:

Paul McCartney Press To Play album review

First of all, that’s a fairly raucous music video for what is a classic Macca rocker – but it was the type of song he hadn’t been releasing much at the time…his previous big hits were pop-flavored, like “Say Say Say” and “Ebony & Ivory.”

“Good Times Coming / Feel The Sun”

Next up is a calypso bit called “Good Times Coming”, which segues into the catchy pop song “Feel The Sun.” Both songs last just over a minute or two, held together in an “Abbey Road” way. A nice “combo” that led into a song that is much derided:

Press to play album

“Talk More Talk”

“Talk” is a quirky song with spoken word passages and sound effects placed throughout…some fans hate this song, but I love the offbeat lyrics.

“Digital organ, finishing stretch
Instrumentation, analogGretsch
Not quite a thousand, lower than that
Possible bargain for listening at that

Talk, more talk, chat, more chat
Words of a feather are worn in a hat
Talk, more talk, chat, more chat
I’m happy to do it for you”

paul-mccartney-mini-cd-press-to-play-25.gif

“Footprints”

“Footprints” is a nice, melodic tune that evokes the story telling of “Eleanor Rigby”:

It’s Beautiful Outside, An Old Hand Gathers Wood,
Can He See Me Sitting Here? His Mind Is Somewhere Else.
His Friend Have Flown Away, He’s Left Out In The Cold.
He Won’t Sit By My Fire, He Says He Likes It In The Snow.
Where Footprints Never Go, He Likes It In The Snow.

paul mccartney only love remains

“Only Love Remains”

This is a classic McCartney love song, performed here with a simple piano..

Here is the video:

If anything, you can make the case that this is a slightly derivative song for Paul, a minor love song, but he comes right back with the first single from the album:

“Press”

“Press”, a slick up-tempo pop song, was released in July 1986 and went on to become the album’s sole top 30 hit.

Here is the music video:

Paul mccartney press album

This song is certainly as catchy as “Silly Love Songs”, a playful song that is easy to sing along to – but it barely registered on the charts, and nothing else from the album charted at all.

And as for the lyrics:

“Right There, That’s It. Yes. When You Feel The Stress
Don’t Just Stand There, Tell Me To Press.

You Can Give Me What I Want I Must Confess,
My Body Needs Attention My Mind Is In A Mess,
Oklahoma Was Never Like This.
Never Like This, It Was Never Like This,
Ever Like This, Say Was It Ever Like This?
Oklahoma Was Never Like This.
It Was Never Like This …”

If anyone has any idea why “Oklahoma was never like this”, please let me know!

The next three songs on the album – “Pretty Little Head”, “Move Over Busker” and “Angry” are album tracks, nothing offensive, but not memorable…

Paul McCartney However Absurd

“However Absurd”

The final song on the album is a bit of “Beatles” whimsy circa “Magical Mystery Tour”, a catchy song that finishes in a orchestrated crescendo that evokes “I Am The Walrus!”

Overall, “Press To Play” is an album full of catchy songs, nice production and the usual albums tracks that are fine if not memorable…

worst paul mccartney albums

The “Press To Play” Reaction!

The album came out and crashed almost immediately, peaking at number 8 in the UK, while in the US, it failed to go gold, peaking at number 30 and selling only 250,000 copies!

McCartney with Phil Collins and Pete Townsend

The Reviews Were In…

Even with Phil Collins and Pete Townsend sitting in on some songs, the reviews were unkind.

AllMusic editor Stephen Thomas Erlewine admired the track “Press”, but gave the album a star rating of 2.5 out of 5, saying:

“McCartney is dabbling in each of his strengths, just to see what works. It doesn’t wind up as one of his stronger albums, but it’s more interesting than some of his more consistent ones, and those aforementioned cuts demonstrate that he could still cut effective pop records when he put his mind to it.”

However, the Los Angeles Times praised “Press” as:

“a sprightly, sunny delight – one of the most playful, positive pop songs ever written about the joy of sex and its link with love”, but finished by concluding that overall the album was “basically just another in a long line (over 12 years!) of post-‘Band on the Run’ letdowns by a once almost unimaginably creative artist.”

Paul McCartney Press To Play album review

Ouch! Is it really that big a letdown? By the way, as you can see from this re-issue, McCartney added three additional songs: “Write Away”, “It’s Not True” and “Tough On A Tightrope”, which are all nice album tracks. In general, I think “Press To Play” holds up well in the catalogue of Macca’s 80’s albums, certainly better than “Pipes Of Peace”…

Paul McCartney Press

More recently, Kit O’Toole of Blogcritics has contended that much of the album belongs among McCartney’s “most ambitious work” and that the adventurousness of the project is unfairly overlooked. O’Toole adds:

“Press to Play, along with McCartney II, arguably laid the foundation for his future musical experiments under the name The Fireman (particularly the first two albums, Strawberries Oceans Ships Forest and Rushes).”

So let’s take a amount to give “Press To Play” another listen, and appreciate that Macca kept releasing a steady stream of music, some terrific, and some just a nice friend to have around…
